Community

Community is indeed the first and most believable gospel that we preach, and this, because the preaching of the reign of God ( be it through prayer or otherwise through the active apostolate) becomes credible only when the persons who speak or pray, as the case may be, have themselves experienced that life of love in a community.

Mindful of this, we nuns constantly endeavor to humanize our community, striving to build bonds of genuine fraternal love and affection among ourselves with the well desired effect that our monastery bears the warm and tender ambiance and aura of a caring and thoughtful family.

We likewise, greatly appreciate our belonging to the larger Dominican family that consists of: the Dominican friars, the nuns themselves, the Dominican apostolic sisters, the Dominican laity and the Dominican youth.

We also enjoy and indeed cherish other close and equally important relationships and interactions with among others:

The natural families of each individual nun,
The monastery’s material and spiritual benefactors,
The monastery’s neighboring communities.

Why do Contemplative Nuns Value Studies

Studies

While it is true that undiscerned study can have the adverse effect of chilling the heart and blinding the intellect to pure faith, an even worse predicament would arise from a blanket condemnation and abandonment of the practice of study altogether. St. Dominic, who certainly must been aware of these dangers, nonetheless saw that study was not only necessary to the range of preaching which he had undertaken, but that it could also contribute greatly to the sanctification of his brothers and sisters within the Order. Moreover, has not the Lord, through His prophet, painfully lamented that His people perish for lack of knowledge.

Through study, therefore, the nuns are undoubtedly led to a deeper knowledge and appreciation of the Scripture and to a true humility of self-understanding. Indeed the life of faith is a life which searches for Divine Truth, Truth which is not just a list of doctrines, but the person of the Word of God, Jesus Christ.

William of St. Thierry points out that “ the love of God is understanding Him: He is not known unless He is loved, nor is He loved unless He is known; and in reality He is known only to the degree that He is loved loved to the degree that He is known.”

In order therefore to reap the full fruits of study, such programs as continuing spiritual formation of the nuns through such ways as private and community exercises of Lectio Divina and guided as well as personal retreats have been adopted and form part of the monastery’s regular routine. Study and continuous spiritual formation are practices that are mutually complementary, in such a way that the need for spiritual growth impels one to engage in study and through study, this hunger is continually fed, although not exhaustively satisfied, so that the need for growth and recourse to study inevitably form the life-long identity of each individual nun, with the result that the nuns’ consecration to the Lord is deepened.

What is Contemplative Life

Our Monastery is entirely dedicated to the contemplative life. Yet someone may ask, “But sister, what is this contemplative life?”

The Sacred Congregation for Religious and Secular Institutes (SCRSI), has pointed out with great precision the exact position of Institutes dedicated to contemplation within the greater magisterium of the Church.

The SCRSI has explained that numerous are those who have heard Jesus’ call to “come away by ourselves to a lonely place”(Mk 6:3) and have followed Christ, withdrawing into the solitude to worship Father there (Venite Seorsum 15, August).

Withdrawing from the world for the sake of leading a more intense life of prayer in solitude, the Sacred Congregation explains, is nothing other than a very particular way of living and expressing the paschal Mystery of Christ, which is death ordained towards resurrection—it is precisely on this account the monasteries were founded, situated as they are, in the very heart of the mystery of Christ.

We, the Nuns at Corpus Christi Monastery, have embraced this as our God-given identity within Christ’s mystical body, the Church. Necessarily therefore, we strive daily, with the help of the strong and support Arm of God’s grace, to reaffirm the absolute primacy that God must occupy in the lives of each individual nun and our community as a whole, called as we have been, to be souls on fire with divine love, contemplatives ceaselessly dedicated to prayer. Ours is a call to have our gaze fixed on the Son of God to the end, in ceaseless contemplation of His mysteries—fulfilling in spousal dimension the following of the Lord, renewing the mystery of the fertile virginity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, spouse of the Holy Spirit, the perfect woman.

Ministry of the Word – Holy Preaching

Although the nuns are not engaged in direct public preaching, they nonetheless discharge this pivotal function of the Order of preachers through prayer.

In his wisdom, Pope St. John XX111 pointed out that the “apostolate in the true sense of the word consists in participation in the salvific work of Christ, which is possible only through assiduous prayer and personal sacrifice.”

The nuns, then, through ardent prayer, accompany the missionary activity of the Order and indeed of the whole church. They participate and are made sharers in Christ’s ministry of intercession, who “even now sits at the right hand of the Father interceding for us.”

Surely, we cannot possibly forget the words of Pope Francis: “Never stop weeping. When priests and religious no longer weep, something is wrong. We need to weep for our infidelity, to weep for all the pain of the world, to weep for all those people who are cast aside, to weep for the elderly who are abandoned, for children who are killed, and for things we do not understand. We need to weep when people ask us: ‘why?’ He went on to say( and this, as spoken from the very depths of his heart), “never stray from Jesus—never stop praying…..do not stop praying.”

While the above sentiments were addressed to all clergy and all men and women religious, how specially, how loudly they resonate in the hearts of the nuns—we, whose specific vocation it to pray for the church and the whole world!

And so we pray: for it is God who sends workers into His harvest when He is asked to do so; who opens the mind of people to hear the Gospel and who makes the word of salvation fruitful in their hearts – accordingly, the nuns are said to exercise an apostolate which, though silent, benefits everyone to the utmost.

Worthy of mention also is the hospitality and warm welcome that our monastery offers in its retreat facilities. Through these, we are able to witness to God’s merciful love for every person and given the multiplicity and diversity of the retreatants housed in our facilities we likewise are enabled to witness to the yearning of that unity that Christ bequeathed to His disciples.

Liturgy and Prayer

Liturgy and Prayer

As has been herein before mentioned, the nuns dedicate themselves to prayer. In a broad sense, prayer within our monastery takes two forms:

Community prayer (Liturgy of the hours)
Private prayer and Lectio Divina.

Community Prayer

Included in our community prayer is Liturgical Prayer. The nuns’ participation in the Eucharistic Sacrifice and the liturgical recitation of the Divine Office constitutes the fulfilment of a function essential to the Ecclesial community, namely, the glorification of God.

Also forming part of our community prayer is the daily recitation of the Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary and through its aid, meditating on the mysteries of the Nativity, Life, Death and Resurrection of our Lord which, plainly speaking, make for authentic everyday Christian living. In the practice of the recitation of the rosary too, the nuns give a loving expression and embrace of Our Lady’s urgent and insistent plea to the little shepherd children of Fatima: “ I want you to pray the Rosary daily.”

F.D Joret O.P recounts that the most magnificent eulogy ever pronounced upon our holy father, St. Dominic, was delivered by the Eternal Father Himself to St. Catherine of Siena, and may be read in her celebrated dialogue. “Dominic” said God the Father, “has taken on Him the office of the Word of My only Begotten Son……He is a light which I give to the world through the intervention of Mary.” It was thus that the Dominican Order came to be: through the intervention of Our Lady. LCM 1 (III).

In the school of Our Lady, the nuns learn the art of permitting and embracing the action of God’s grace in their souls thereby being gradually and progressively transfigured and conformed to the image of her divine Son; as such, we ( each nun, singly, and all of us, collectively) are called to become a cradle and a beacon of hope—striving daily to transcend all boundaries, whatever their nature or form, in order to secure—in trust—the hope of all humanity: for truly, stewarding this great mystery is among the greatest privileges and responsibilities of our contemplative life. What’s more, to help the nuns continually renew themselves along this sometimes long and winding spiritual journey and as a way of proving a spiritual platform upon which to reaffirming their dedication and full belonging to the Lord, each year, the monastery organizes within its precincts an eight (8) day community retreat, three days before Pentecost, three days before Corpus Christi, and an individual three days before each sister’s anniversary of first profession.

Private Prayer and Lection Divina

Similarly, the practice of private prayer is a well cherished, precious jewel in our monastery. The nuns formally dedicate two (2) hours (one hour of which is dedicated to private adoration before the Blessed Sacrament) each day to earnest private prayer and Lectio Divina.

Further, each first Friday of the month is a community recollection day—on this day the nuns are called to a more profound silence as a special aid to deeper meditation and contemplation.

In addition, there is a provision and facility for each solemnly professed nun to make a private, eight (8) day annual retreat.
